THIS OPPORTUNITY IS NOW CLOSED FOR WRITERS
WELCOME TO SHORTWAVES:
Scriptworks present a SHOWCASE FOR RADIO.
THIS IS A CALL TO WRITERS FOR TEN MINUTE SCRIPTS FOR RADIO.
DEADLINE FOR SCRIPTS: WED 9 MAY
PERFORMANCES: Public Performance at Contact’s Space 2. Studio Recording sessions and Broadcast on ALL FM.
KEY DATES: Workshops and mentorship between 14 and 25 MAY. Public Performance on MON 28 MAY, Studio Recording WEEK BEGINNING 4th JUNE.
BURSARIES AVAILABLE: There is a writing bursary for this project which is £150 per writer to support the development of their work.
Scriptworks have secured Arts Council funding to support our local writing community in the development of 4 new 10m scripts for radio. Development work will include a Scriptworks session, one-to-one sessions with professional radio mentors and a dramaturgy workshop. The scripts will be performed live at Contact in Space 2. The scripts will then be professionally recorded and produced in the studio and aired on ALL FM as part of Contact’s Noise Generation radio show. This show is broadcast the last Tuesday of every month. The final mastered recordings will also be made available on Soundcloud.
All writers must be available for a Scriptworks session and development work with a Radio Mentor (details below).
All Scripts to be submitted by WED 9 MAY
Selection will be announced by close of play FRI 11 MAY
Writers are encouraged to attend rehearsals and recording sessions, and should ensure they are available for the Performance Day MON 28th MAY
Entries must be no longer than ten minutes in total. The plays will be broadcast in 2 x 5min slots during the NOISE GENERATION radio show on ALL FM and receive a single 10 minute presentation at Space 2 in Contact. Generally, a page is about a minute of time, but this is no certain measure – so please read your scripts aloud to more accurately estimate their length. We will be unable to consider any scripts that do not fit the time slot available. An example radio script from the BBC Writers Room can be found here. You can use this for formatting guidance.
Write with the medium in mind, and be as creative and imaginative as you can. We are looking for exciting new pieces of work and brave uses of sound and music to tell story will be received well.
Each successful script will be given 3-4 hours of development, and 2 hour rehearsal for the live performance. Writers are required to work on redrafting their scripts between development sessions. The purpose of this project is artist development and it is vital that successful applicants engage with the process.
Selected applicants will be asked to attend an initial Scriptworks session on either MON 14 MAY or TUE 15 MAY as a starting point for the project. Due to the way the group runs, and the nature of our process, attendance will be required in order for your script to be produced.
Please send entries to Scriptworks@heaven.co.uk
The scripts will be judged by a panel of Scriptworks chairs/co-chairs and radio experts. Members of the panel will be selected from, but not exclusively, the following on the basis of availability: Jason Crouch, Conor McKee and Sarah Meadows from Scriptworks, mentor Charlotte Goodwin and representative from Contact Abbie Wilcox.
The criteria used will be as follows:
1) Artistic merit of the script.
2) Is the script the correct length and format?
3) Is the script viable for radio production?
4) Is the script suitable for all ages?
Full terms and conditions are available here.
