Shortwaves Pilot

Contact’s monthly radio show, Noise Generation on ALLFM (96.9) is piloting a new feature, which will develop into a project called Shortwaves later in 2012. This will be an opportunity for local writers to create a short (10m) radio play which will be workshopped, produced and broadcast as a new and regular feature of the show.

The brief and timeline for the pilot project is as follows:

Write a ten minute play in two halves of 5 minutes each with a cliff-hanger at the end of the first half. It can have up to two main characters and four additional voices.

The theme is around change and is in response to the quote:

In his later years Pablo Picasso was not allowed to roam an art gallery unattended, for he had previously been discovered in the act of trying to improve on one of his old masterpieces.” –Unknown

The deadline for submissions is Midday on TUESDAY 10 APRIL 2012 – please return all submissions to

Examples of  formatting scripts for radio can be found here.

The Process:

Two scripts will be selected to take part in the pilot project. We will inform all applicants of the results of the selection process by close of play Wednesday 11 April.

Successful writers will be required to commit to the following dates:

Thursday 12 April Workshop session
Tuesday 17 April Rewrite deadline

The workshop will be run by Scriptworks and will involve a read-through of the work with professional actors, followed by analysis and feedback. At the end of the workshop the writers will have clear ideas on how they can revise and enhance their work.

The recording will take place during the week after the rewrite so please keep that free if you would like to see your work being recorded and the production process.

The 2 successful scripts will be broadcast on shows in April and May.

Tuesday 24 April               Broadcast 1

Tuesday 29 May               Broadcast 2

The writers will also be given a brief two minute slot to introduce yourself and your work on the show.
